How does my family apply?
Please complete the following information in order to be considered:
· A photo copy of the applicant and co-applicant (if applicable) Driver’s License
Please send the above or drop off to:
Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity
2401 Scott Blvd. SE
Iowa City, IA 52240
How do I know if my family was approved?
The “normal” process takes about 3-6 months to review all of the applications and to interview prospective families. You will be notified of your application status once decisions have been made.
What are sweat equity hours?
If your application is approved you will become a “partner family” with Habitat for Humanity. As a partner family you will be responsible for 500 hours of sweat equity, or volunteer time (250 hours for a one parent household). The sweat equity hours may be accomplished in constructing your house and the houses of others, it may include working in the Habitat office or Restore, attending classes, attending or helping with special events. If your application is approved and you do become a partner family, before we can put you on the list to plan for your house the applicant and co-applicant (if applicable) will need to complete 50 hours of sweat equity. After these initial hours are completed, the remaining 200 hours (400 if it is a couple) will need to be completed before you move into your new home. However, your friends and family can help you with these hours.
Will the house be free?
No, if you are approved as a partner family you will be buying the house from Habitat. However, we only charge the costs we have in the house, so we do not make a profit on the sale of the house and we do not charge any interest on the loan, which plays a large part in making the mortgage affordable.
Do I have to be of Christian to participate?
No, we welcome all people of different faiths, cultures and ethnicity.
