The City of Iowa City Presents the East Side Recycling Center!!
So what this means is that there will be a few changes to the ReStore in the next year during construction.
- Our hours will change on July 9th to help accomodate site construction: Wed-Fri, 12-6pm, Sat 10-4pm
- The front door will move from the south side of the building to the NORTH side of the building. Don't worry, there will be signs to direct you!
- We do not anticipate having to close the store during construction, but stay tuned for any last minute changes.
- AND WE WILL NEED VOLUNTEERS!! The ReStore staff will have to move ALL of the materials in the ReStore at least a couple times in the next year to help with renovations...the store will be bigger and more beautiful, but it will take a lot of work! Call Jessica if you'd like to help--338-5687.
- Please be mindful of these huge changes to the store. Donations will be more strict because of less room in the store and we will be having big sales to keep the stock small. Let us know of any suggestions or concerns and we'll do our best to keep everyone happy. icrestore@gmail.com
The Concept Site Plan below details the functions that will eventually exist at the East Side Recycling Center. The site will host a green environmental education building, an oil waste drop-off site, an electronic waste drop-off site and a pick-up station for compost and wood chips.

The stormwater runoff from this facility will be managed sustainably on site through the use of bioswales. Other projects such as a green roof on the education building and permeable paving are still being considered.
The environmental education center will likely host both an indoor and outdoor education room for groups to learn about waste reduction, recycling, stormwater management and other environmental projects throughout the City.
In addition to Habitat’s ReStore, plans call for eventually housing The Furniture Project and the Salvage Barn at the East Side Recycling Center. Each of these organizations has been asked to join the East Side Recycling Center to demonstrate to citizens how different pieces of our local building economy, human services and historic preservation relate to waste reduction, reuse, and recycling.

The East Side Recycling Center, located at 2401 Scott Blvd. SE, was purchased by the City of Iowa City in 2006 to provide a site for citizens to reuse and recycle materials and to learn about waste- and stormwater-related issues. The City will also use the space to display urban stormwater best management practices and to host several local non-profit agencies that play a role in waste reduction in the community.
Currently, a recycling drop site is available. Anyone may recycle cardboard, paper/newspaper, brown/green glass, clear glass, #1-7 plastic (except Styrofoam and plastic bags), and metal (steel and aluminum cans). This recycling drop site is similar to others in the city, including:
- Iowa City Landfill & Recycling Center, (3900 Hebl Avenue) (all recycling)
- Hy-Vee, 1201 North Dodge (all recycling)
- Drug Town, 301 N. 1st Avenue (paper/newspaper, plastics 1-7)
- Eastdale Plaza, 1st Ave. & Lower Muscatine (paper/newspaper, plastics 1-7)
- City Carton Co., 3 East Benton (all recycling)
