FAQ
How old do you have to be to volunteer?
On normal build days, all on-site volunteers must be 16 or older. Those between 16 and 18 will not be allowed to use power tools or work more than 6' in the air, and they will be designated by wearing a red name tag. Those under 16 can help with signing in volunteers, serving food, and other similar tasks. Please contact us if you have any questions.
How will I know if my volunteer shift is canceled?
On the day of the shift, check IVHFH's weather link to see if your shift has been delayed or canceled due to inclement weather. Normally the shifts are only canceled for severe thunderstorms.
What should I wear to volunteer?
Wear weather-appropriate clothing and closed-toed shoes. Tennis shoes are okay, but sandals are not allowed.
Do I need to have prior construction experience to volunteer?
Absolutely not; everyone is welcome, no matter if they are seasoned or inexperienced in construction. As long as you have a great attitude and are ready to have fun, our construction supervisors will help you along the way!
Should I bring anything?
We provide all necessary tools. However, we encourage you to bring any work gloves, tool belts, or tools if you have them. We'll also have water and snacks on-site, thanks to the generous support of UNFI (United Natural Foods Incorporated). Feel free to bring any additional food or drinks that you'd like, as we do not serve lunch during our normal volunteer shifts.
What should I do once I get to the build site?
Sign in! Even though you have registered online we have no way of tracking your volunteer hours unless you sign in at the build site. It's important that all volunteers sign in for each shift they work so our records are accurate. Once you sign in, find the construction supervisors and they will orient you on the tasks ahead.
What if I can't work the entire shift?
Our normal build days are Thursday-Saturday, and we have two different shifts each day: morning (8-12 p.m.) and afternoon (1-5 p.m.). Although we encourage all volunteers to arrive at their shifts on time and stay until the end of the shift, it is okay if you are unable to do so.
What if I have to cancel my volunteer shift?
Simply sign back into the volunteer registration page and cancel your shift.

Why We Need You
Habitat relies on volunteers to build homes, staff our office, help with our events, and spread awareness of our mission in our community. Our Habitat affiliate simply cannot eliminate poverty housing in our area without you. Fortunately, our dedicated volunteer base has already constructed more than 50 homes, but we need more bodies to build even more.
At Habitat for Humanity there are many volunteer opportunities. All it takes is a desire to make a difference in the lives of families, a willingness to learn, and an ability to work with others. No matter what your skills, IVHFH will match you where you can best serve. We look forward to working with you soon.
