A Message from the Liz Swanson Women Build Committee

​Empowerment starts with a home. It starts when families can worry less, when futures become clearer, and dreams become realities. As members of Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity's Women Build Committee, we come together to help our neighbors access safe, stable housing. Along the way, we've found confidence, friendship, community, and empowerment in one another. Your gift to Women Build makes that possible this year and for years to come. 

We're working alongside Dr. Elizabeth "Liz" Swanson, Honoree of Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity's 16th Women Build. Through leadership in nursing and philanthropy, Liz continues empowering others to learn, grow, and thrive. Our 2026 project is meaningful as she shares a unique connection with future homeowner. Liz shares, 

“I have actively served the community in leadership positions with deep passion, focusing on getting things done for the people in this community, especially women and girls. I must say, though, this opportunity as the Women Build honoree far exceeds my wildest dreams. I will be assisting the Women Build Committee of Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity and staff to build a house with a practicing nurse, a single mom working nights to support her three children.”

Like many hardworking families, this mother has found affordable housing just out of reach. With new hope for the future, she shares,

“Finally, everyone will have their own room, enough space for my kids to do schoolwork, walk or run without anyone complaining downstairs, to have enough space to welcome friends and family.”

Our fundraising will also support IVHFH’s Helping Hands program, which assists homeowners unable to afford critical home repairs, emergency repairs, and accessibility modifications, allowing them to continue living safely and with dignity in the homes they love. Helping Hands allowed a homeowner to replace her failing roof. After years of feeling overwhelmed and hopeless, she’s looking to the future. Small changes like painting her bedroom lilac and installing a thrifted light fixture represent something bigger. She shares,

“I didn’t know how I was going to make it. Having a safe roof over my head changed everything.”

Women Build Construction Class

Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity construction staff and skilled construction volunteers will host a workshop for those interested in volunteering to build Habitat homes.

​These beginner-level classes will cover tool identification, construction terminology, site safety, and more. Attendees must be 18 or older.
