Helping Hands
Barriers to obtaining safe, decent shelter are especially significant for those with insufficient income. Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity's Helping Hands home repair program works to lower these barriers for residents of Cedar, Iowa, Johnson, Louisa, and Washington Counties by overseeing affordable critical home repairs, accessibility modifications, and ERMAR services which include emergency home repairs and major appliance replacements. ARPA Funding and Allocation
Funds through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) allowed state and local governments to support public health, infrastructure, housing, and workforce development programs. Johnson County chose to invest some of those funds in several nonprofits, including Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity's Helping Hands home repair program.
ARPA funds played a critical part in the program's ability to address repair needs within the community and contributed to improving the safety and livability of 57 Johnson County Households since 2023. Read about the impact of ARPA funds on the Helping Hands program here. |

Helping Hands in Johnson County, 2025
In 2025, the Helping Hands home repair program completed extensive work across Johnson County. Across this work, 85% of the homeowners served had household incomes below 50% of the Area Median Income (AMI).
Within Johnson County, the program primarily completed repairs to critical functions of the home, such as unsafe roofing and flooring and internal systems, along with accessibility and age-in-place modifications for older adults and those with physical disabilities.
