decent
housing

must be safe
and accessible
Barriers to obtaining safe, decent shelter are especially significant for those with insufficient income. Under our Helping Hands program, we work to lower these barriers for residents of Cedar, Iowa, Johnson, and Washington Counties by overseeing affordable critical home repairs, accessibility modifications, and emergency repairs (ERMAR).

I can't say thank you enough. For someone who is struggling to pay the bills, I wouldn't have a kitchen without this program."

-Kenny
(Iowa Valley) Habitat for Humanity helped build a ramp for my parents ... now my dad can get down from the house without worrying about falling."

-Julie
When someone offers help, it's fantastic... it means a lot."

-Sierra
This means peace. With my health problems, it has been hard to take care of the problems with my home. This (repair project) takes weight off my shoulders."

-Tami
It was harder to live in my house (before the Helping Hands modifications). Being in my wheelchair, I couldn't get it into the bathroom... I can get down the hallway and feel comfortable."

-Steve
I thank God for Habitat. If it wasn't for you, (my husband) wouldn't be able to come home."

-Deborah
Do you need affordable home repairs or accessibility modifications? You may qualify for a Helping Hands repair if you:

own a home that is in need of repair.
We require that you own your home. Staff will evaluate each application and determine which repairs are most pressing.
Each homeowner must meet income guidelines (see below).

are willing to partner with Habitat for Humanity.
Each homeowner has different talents, and we ask that Helping Hands homeowners share those talents with the community. Partnership can range from working on a Habitat construction project to providing a meal for the crew.

are able to make a monthly payment.
We require that homeowners make a monthly payment to repay the costs of the repair. To ensure that each project is affordable, we do not make a profit on the repair project and we will structure repayment to fit the needs of each homeowner.

Income guidelines for critical repairs and accessibility projects

We will consider projects for households that have an annual income lower than the figures listed below. Please contact the office if you have questions.

ERMAR (Emergency Repair and Major Appliance Replacement)

Some home repairs just can't wait, so we offer an emergency repair service. We streamlined our processes so that, through ERMAR, we can address home repairs when time is especially critical. Examples of ERMAR projects include water heater and furnace replacement, simple repairs to plumbing, HVAC and electrical systems, as well as ramp construction. If you need an emergency repair, return the completed application including all required paperwork to the office.

At this time ERMAR services are only available in Johnson County. Maximums are calculated to represent 50% of the area median income. Criteria was established using data published by the Department of Housing and Urban Development and may change as new data is released.
