frequently
asked
questions

volunteer
If you have a question about volunteering with Habitat for Humanity,
chances are it’s been asked before.

We’d love to help by answering a few frequently asked questions.
Q: I’m interested in volunteering with Habitat. What is the first step to getting involved?
A: The first step is to visit the Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity volunteer schedule to search our current opportunities. Next, create an account and sign up for the volunteer opportunities that work for you.

Q: How old must I be to volunteer with Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity?
A: All construction volunteers must be at least 16 years old. Volunteers under 18 will not be able to use power tools or work more than 6 feet in the air. ReStore volunteers must be at least 14 years of age. All volunteers under 18 must have a parent or guardian sign a waiver of liability to consent to participation. Email the Volunteer Coordinator if you have any questions.

Q: I have volunteered with a group in the past, but want to come back as an individual. How can I do that?
A: We welcome anyone who volunteered with a group to come back as an individual! Visit our volunteer schedule to sign up! If you’re interested in a different opportunity, you can find descriptions for each opportunity.

Q: Do I have to be there the whole day?
A: Depending on the opportunity, you may choose any available three or four hour shift. However, we welcome you to volunteer the entire day. Construction and home repair projects may benefit best from a full day’s commitment. The ReStore has shifts available Tuesday-Saturday.

Q: I have required hours to complete. Is there a way I can get them verified?
A: Yes. Contact the Volunteer Coordinator (volunteer@iowavalleyhabitat.org or 319- 337-8949) before you begin volunteering to make arrangements for verification of hours. Ask about requirements for volunteer engagement to earn court appointed community service hours.

Q: Do you have volunteer opportunities on nights and weekends?
A: We do have some construction, repair, and ReStore volunteer opportunities on Saturdays. Otherwise, our shifts are on weekdays during the day. We have some other opportunities with more flexible hours. Further information will be included when you click on a specific opportunity.

Q: I have volunteered as an individual before, but want to volunteer with a group. How can I get started?
A: If you’d like to get a small group (2-6 individuals) together to volunteer with us, share the link with your group and instruct each participant to create an account and sign in. You may contact the volunteer coordinator (volunteer@iowavalleyhabitat.org or 319-337-8949) to make group reservations until all of your participants have signed in to the shift you have selected.

For larger groups (7+), you can contact the Volunteer Coordinator (volunteer@iowavalleyhabitat.org or 319-337-8949) to learn more about getting your group involved. If you’d like to volunteer and contribute funds to our mission for affordable homeownership, join a TEAM, earn t-shirts and a meal prepared by a volunteer! Together Everyone Achieves More!

Q: I have some days off every week. Can I volunteer on a more regular basis?
A: Yes, we have options for individuals interested in becoming regular volunteers. Every volunteer makes a difference. For more information, please see our volunteer opportunities schedule.

Q: How can I learn more about your construction or ReStore programs?
A: Great question! Details about the many volunteer programs at Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity are covered in the Volunteer Orientation, which is scheduled bi-weekly at our ReStore in Iowa City, or at the start of each construction shift. Learn more about the Orientation and how to sign up here.
